The Nagel Committee’s report states that war with Türkiye is approaching

The 20-page secret document emphasizes that the two countries are being dragged into a military conflict due to the conflict of interests in Syria and Erdoğan’s policies. It is envisaged that the defense budget will be increased, and new weapons will be purchased to be ready. Israel’s new doctrine will not be deterrence but attack.

The report of the Nagel Committee, established by the Tel Aviv government, warns that Israel should be prepared for “a direct conflict with Türkiye.” The commission’s defense budget and security strategy report was announced on Monday evening. Twenty pages of the 130-page document are kept secret.

The committee is chaired by former National Security Council Chairman Jacob Nagel, accompanied by 14 experts and former senior defense officials. On Monday, the committee presented its recommendations to Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Israel Katz, and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, outlining a comprehensive strategy against emerging threats.

‘NEW FORCES ARE ENTERING THE ARENA’

Netanyahu said the following about the report: “We are witnessing radical changes in the Middle East. Iran has long been our greatest threat, but new forces are entering the arena, and we must be prepared for the unexpected. This report provides us with a roadmap to secure Israel’s future.”

‘GREATER THAN THE IRAN THREAT’

The committee says that Türkiye’s ambition to regain its Ottoman-era influence could lead to increased tensions with Israel and possibly lead to conflict. The document emphasizes the risk that Syrian groups could ally with Türkiye, posing a new and powerful threat to Israel’s security.

The report, which says, “The threat from Syria could become even more dangerous than the Iranian threat,” warns that Turkish-backed forces could act as proxies and fuel regional instability.

MORE WEAPONS AGAINST ERDOĞAN

The Israeli press emphasizes that the Committee’s assessment comes at a time when President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is pursuing increasingly assertive policies in the region, which some analysts see as running counter to Israel’s interests.

The Committee is calling for a steady increase in the defense budget over the next five years to ensure that the Israeli military is equipped to deal with the challenges posed by Türkiye, as well as other regional threats.

SHOPPING LIST

The document proposes the following military steps:

“Advanced weapons: Purchase additional F-15 fighter jets, refueling aircraft, UAVs, and satellites to strengthen Israel’s long-range strike capabilities.

“Air defense systems: Develop multi-layered air defense capabilities, including the Iron Dome, David’s Sling, Arrow systems, and the newly operational Iron Beam laser-based defense system.

“Border security: The construction of a fortified security barrier along the Jordan Valley would signal a significant change in Israel’s defense strategy, despite its potential diplomatic consequences with Jordan.”

RUBIN’S VOICE ECHOES

At the end of December, the Aydınlık newspaper published four articles by Michael Rubin, one of the main spokesmen for the American deep state, directly targeting Türkiye. The four articles penned by Rubin, which our newspaper brought to the attention of the public under the title “US threat memorandums,” encouraged both the US and Israel to engage in military conflict with Türkiye. Notably, the committee’s report emerged when what was being discussed in the corridors of the American state was being shared with the public by Rubin’s pen and when the interests of Türkiye and Israel, especially in Syria, conflicted.

One of the radical changes suggested by the commission is to shift the Israeli defense organization from a deterrent and defensive stance to a much more proactive and preventive attack stance regarding threats. Committee Chairman Nagel said at a press conference that this change would mean shifting resources to 70 percent offense and 30 percent defense.

Nagel suggested adding billions of dollars to the 2025 budget to achieve this and maintaining a certain increased budget until 2030. This would bring the annual joint budget of the Israeli army and the Ministry of Defense to approximately $34 billion.

FAR AWAY THREATS

The Commission Chairman noted that in addition to the offensive approach, the military’s funding and accumulation to combat distant threatening countries and forces such as Iran were insufficient and needed more resources and budgets. He also noted that Israel needed more resources in space, cyber warfare, artificial intelligence, and technology-related security issues.

MILITARY SERVICE TO BE LIMITED TO 3 YEARS

Nagel also proposed extending the mandatory service for men to 36 months permanently and advocated for the full integration of ultra-Orthodox Haredim into the army. One of the reasons former Defense Minister Yoav Galant was fired was because he advocated for Haredim conscription.

INDEPENDENT DEFENSE INDUSTRY

Another important point emphasized by the Commission Chairman was the need for Israel to produce more of its basic weapons independently. However, he did not announce any plans to address this issue. Previous reports in the Israeli press indicated that some weapons and industries, such as the fighter jet sector, could take at least ten years to develop.
