The 100 Dragon Elevator in China is known as the world’s fastest and largest open-air elevator! The 100 Dragon Elevator (also known as the Bailong Elevator) that entered the Guinness Book of World Records is also on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list! Here are the details of that elevator:
The Bailong Elevator, or in other words, the 100 Dragon Elevator, was built on the edge of a giant cliff in the Zhangjiajie (China) national park, which also includes Wulingyuan Canyon, which is on the World Cultural Heritage list. It holds the title of the world’s highest and heaviest elevator with a height of 330 meters.
It has also entered the Guinness Book of Records with this title. The construction of the Bailong Elevator began in October 1999. It was warned by international organizations due to work safety and environmental measures, its construction was frequently stopped and therefore its construction continued until 2002. According to official figures, 126 million Yuan was spent during its construction and an average of 200,000 Yuan is earned daily from the elevator.
The main reason for its construction is to be able to watch the Wulingyuan Canyon, which is on the World Cultural Heritage List, and to make this area a tourist attraction. The Wulingyuan Canyon, where the Bailong Elevator, also known as the 100 Dragon Elevator, is located, is a true natural wonder. The hills in the canyon, which was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992, are famous for being karst and quartzite.
The elevator welcomed more than 5 million visitors the year it was opened. The elevator, which is surrounded by glass, can carry up to 50 people at a time and can serve approximately 18,000 people per day.
Each of the 3 double-decker elevators reaches the top floor in a short time of 1 minute and 32 seconds. The weight of each of these elevators reaches 4,900 kilograms.
On July 16, 2015, the elevator was officially recognized by Guinness as the world’s highest open-air elevator and its certificate was delivered.
