From May 19 to 23, 2025, the ICRA Sim2Real Challenge (S2R2025)—a highlight of the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation held in Atlanta, USA—gathered 83 elite robotics teams from around the world. Among these were representatives from top institutions such as Tsinghua University, Harvard University, the National University of Singapore, and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence.
After a competitive two-month online simulation round, eight top-performing teams were selected for the offline Sim2Real finals. The Youth2Real team from Tsinghua University’s Department of Computer Science and Technology, led by Professor Fuchun Sun, claimed the championship title with a pioneering solution that pushed the boundaries of robotic autonomy and transfer learning.
🤖 Embodied Intelligence Meets Sim2Real Transfer
The Youth2Real team’s success was powered by an innovative approach based on embodied AI, integrating several advanced methodologies:
- Multitask natural semantic interaction
- Knowledge-driven autonomous learning
- General manipulation orchestration
- Cross-task behavior generalization
- Seamless sim-to-real transfer learning
Their mobile dual-arm robotic system demonstrated the ability to autonomously learn manipulation tasks such as grasping and transporting within a simulated environment and effectively transfer those skills to physical robotic systems in real-world settings.
The solution significantly enhanced the robot’s performance in:
- Multitask learning
- Autonomous skill acquisition
- Rapid sim-to-real skill deployment
- Generalization across diverse task scenarios

🏆 About the Competition
The IEEE ICRA Conference, established in 1984, is recognized as one of the most prestigious global gatherings in the field of robotics and automation. The Sim2Real Challenge, now in its fourth edition, continues to inspire technological innovation by encouraging research that bridges the gap between simulation-based learning and real-world robotic applications.
The victory by Tsinghua’s Youth2Real team further solidifies the university’s position as a global leader in robotics, artificial intelligence, and cutting-edge machine learning research.
