SJTU-SOO Summer School in Coastal Field Methods

August 31 – September 12, 2025 | Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Xuhui Campus

The School of Oceanography at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is now accepting applications for the SJTU-SOO 2025 Summer School in Coastal Field Methods. This exciting 12-day course offers a unique opportunity for undergraduate and first-year graduate students to gain hands-on experience in coastal geology while exploring Shanghai’s dynamic coastline.

🔍 What is Coastal Geology and Why Does It Matter?

Coastal geology is the study of the geological structure and processes of the coastal transition zone—spanning from the coastline to the continental shelf. It is a vital field that informs modern strategies for coastal protection, sustainable development, and understanding climate change impacts on vulnerable communities.

The SJTU summer school will introduce participants to the interdisciplinary nature of coastal sciences, drawing connections to marine geology, coastal engineering, and coastal ecology. Through theoretical and field-based training, students will examine how extreme weather events, such as storms, interact with long-term coastal climate change.

🎯 Course Goals and Objectives

The summer school is built around the theme:
“Linking Extreme Storms to Coastal Climate Change.”

Students will:

  1. Learn basic concepts and techniques in coastal geology
  2. Analyze coastal evolution across space and time
  3. Design and carry out a field-oriented scientific study

By the end of the program, participants will develop stronger scientific communication and problem-solving skills through group activities, peer review, and a final project presentation.

All students will receive 2 credit hours, which can be transferred to their home universities.
