Overview

Tianjin University (TJU) offers 67 undergraduate programs. Most are 4-year full-time programs (Architecture is 5 years). Programs are primarily delivered in Chinese. Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Pharmaceutical Science are available in English (with Pharmaceutical Science taught exclusively in English).

Upon completing the curriculum, passing assessments, and defending a graduation thesis, students are awarded an undergraduate degree.

Chinese language graduation requirements

  • Chinese-taught majors: Level 5 of the Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages (students majoring in Chinese Language must reach Level 6).
  • English-taught majors: Level 4 of the same standard.

Qualifications

  1. Nationality & Status
  • Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport.
  • Former Chinese citizens who later immigrated must meet the conditions of Ministry of Education Document No. 12 (2020).
  1. Education, Age & Conduct
  • High school diploma required; under age 25.
  • Applicants under 18 as of September 1, 2026 must submit an original guardian certificate issued by the Tianjin District Notary Office; the guardian must be a permanent resident of Tianjin.
  • Applicants should be in good health, of good character, well-behaved, and willing to abide by Chinese laws and university rules.
  1. Language Proficiency
    A. Chinese-instructed programs
  • Submit HSK-5 (≥180), or HSK-4 (≥180) for programs in the School of International Education.
  • Native Chinese speakers or those who completed high school in Chinese may be exempt from HSK.

B. English-instructed programs

  • Submit IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 80.
  • Native English speakers are exempt.
  • Applicants who completed high school in English may submit a Certificate of High School Study in English instead of IELTS/TOEFL.

How to Apply

Complete the Online Application via the International Student Service System (ISSS): tju.at0086.cn/student. Fill in all required fields and upload the documents listed below.

Application Schedule: October 15, 2025 – April 15, 2026

Scholarship note: Due to limited quotas, apply before April 1, 2026 if you seek scholarships.

Required Application Documents (Upload to ISSS)

  1. Scan of original high school diploma or original notarized diploma.
    • If not yet graduated: upload a Pre-graduation Certificate by the deadline and resubmit the original diploma before registration.
  2. Notarized high school transcripts or international standardized test results (e.g., SAT/ACT/A-Level/AP/IB).
  3. China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) transcript.
  4. Passport copy valid after September 1, 2026.
    • If immigrated or with a Chinese national parent: include proof of naturalization timing, proof of Chinese nationality renunciation, and visa records for entry/exit to China over the past four years.
  5. Proof of Chinese or English proficiency (see Qualifications).
  6. Study & Work Experience Resume (from senior high school to present, with uninterrupted dates).
    • All prior study in China must be fully disclosed. Concealment/misrepresentation may lead to revocation of admission.
  7. Study Plan (≥600 words).
  8. Foreigner Physical Examination Form (all items completed, exam dated after Oct 1, 2025).
  9. If currently in China:
    • Visa copy, and a school certificate of good conduct/performance.
    • If enrolled in a Chinese university: Certificate of Withdrawal from current university.
  10. Non-Criminal Record Certificate (issued within 6 months before application).
    • Fresh high school graduates may submit a school good-conduct certificate.
  11. Bank Savings Certificate or Financial Guarantor’s Income Certificate.
  12. Guardian Certificate (original) for applicants under 18 as of Sept 1, 2026.
  13. Other attachments (e.g., award certificates).

Evaluation & Admission

Step 1: Take the CSCA Test

  • Sit the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) organized by the China Scholarship Council (on behalf of the MoE).
  • Check www.csca.cn for test dates and content.
  • Tip: Take CSCA early and submit scores promptly to allow time for review.
  • For specific subjects, see “2026 TJU CSCA Test Subjects for International Undergraduate Students.”
  • CSCA scores are a key quantitative basis for assessing applicants’ academic capabilities—prepare thoroughly.

Step 2: Complete & Submit the Online Application

  • Apply via ISSS (tju.at0086.cn/student) within the stated schedule and upload all documents.

Step 3: Interview

  • Eligible applicants will be invited to an interview evaluating comprehensive qualities and Chinese language proficiency.

Step 4: Admission Result & Fee Payment

  • Admitted students must pre-pay a deposit of 7,000 RMB and an application fee of 420 RMB by the deadline.
  • After payment, TJU issues the electronic “Admission Notice” and the “Visa Application for Study in China” in July.
  • Fees are non-refundable if the student later decides not to register.

Scholarships

Chinese Government Scholarship (Type A)

(For Chinese-instructed programs only)

  • Apply via Chinese embassies/consulates abroad.
  • On the application form, list “Tianjin University” as your first-choice institution.
  • Application period generally November – February (following year).
  • It is recommended to obtain a Pre-admission Notice from TJU before applying.
  • Refer to the respective embassy/consulate websites for deadlines and details.

How to apply: While completing the undergraduate application online, upload the scholarship application form under the “Scholarship Application Form” section in the TJU system (tju.at0086.cn/student).

Visa Application & Registration

  • Bring your ordinary passport, Admission Notice, Visa Application Form (JW201/JW202), and original Foreigner Physical Examination Form (plus original test reports) to a PRC Embassy/Consulate to apply for an X1 student visa.
  • Arrive at TJU with the required documents and complete on-site registration within the dates on the Admission Notice.
  • Registration is normally in late August or early September.
  • Present original high school certificates and submit certified copies (by your high school or authorized bodies) for enrollment qualification review.
  • Failure of qualification review results in disqualification.

Costs

  1. Application Fee:420 RMB
    • Pay after admission. CGS (Type A) winners do not need to pay.
  2. Tuition (per year):
    • General Programs: 16,600 RMB (Chinese-taught) | 20,000 RMB (English-taught)
    • Architecture / Software Engineering / Urban & Rural Planning / Landscape Architecture: 26,000 RMB
    Tuition and scholarships are subject to the final Admission Notice.
  3. Insurance: 800 RMB/year (Accidental Injury & Hospitalization)
  4. Accommodation:
    • All fees non-refundable once paid.
    • Two campuses; dorm types range 15–60 RMB/bed/day.
