The Supreme People’s Court announced on September 28 that the Changchun Intermediate People’s Court in Jilin Province has publicly delivered its first-instance verdict in the bribery case against Tang Renjian, former Party Secretary and Minister of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. Tang has been convicted of bribery and sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, stripped of political rights for life, and ordered to forfeit all personal assets. Proceeds and interest from his crimes already in hand shall be turned over to the state treasury, and any remaining portion will continue to be recovered in accordance with the law. China News
Publicly available information shows Tang was born in August 1962. In May 2024, authorities officially announced he was under investigation, and in November of the same year, he was expelled from the Party and removed from public office. He was accused of failing to effectively implement the central government’s policies on agriculture and rural areas, making blind decisions in poverty alleviation campaigns, and exhibiting excessive greed. The court’s investigation found that from 2007 to 2024, Tang used his roles — including Deputy Director of the Central Financial and Economic Affairs Leading Group Office, Deputy Director of the Central Rural Work Leading Group Office, member of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Party Standing Committee and Deputy Chairman of its People’s Government, Deputy Leader and Office Director of the Central Rural Work Leading Group, Deputy Secretary and Governor of Gansu Province, and ultimately Party Secretary and Minister of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs — to assist units and individuals in business operations, project contracting, and personnel promotions. He accepted money and property, either personally or through intermediaries, totaling more than RMB 268 million. China News
The court held that Tang’s conduct constituted the crime of bribery, with an exceptionally large amount involved, inflicting especially serious damage to state and public interests. He is legally eligible for the death penalty. However, considering that he was involved in attempted bribery, fully confessed to most bribery facts not yet known to investigators, expressed repentance, actively returned illicit gains, and that the majority of his ill-gotten funds have already been recovered, the court exercised leniency and suspended execution of the death sentence.
