Introduction to SMU Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) is a multi-disciplinary university encompassing engineering, management, economics, law, liberal arts, and sciences, with special emphasis on shipping, logistics, and ocean engineering. The university runs three post-doctoral research stations, 17 doctoral programs, 62 master’s degree programs, 52 bachelor’s degree programs, and 13 associate degree programs. SMU boasts 16 provincial and ministerial key research institutes and laboratories, one state-level key discipline, five state-level specialties with special features, nine ministerial or municipal key disciplines, and 17 Shanghai municipal “educational heights” disciplines. In addition, the SMU engineering discipline ranks in the top 1% of ESI rankings globally. SMU also owns a newly built 48-thousand-ton Yangtze handymax bulk carrier for teaching and internship training, named “Yuming.”

Chinese Government Scholarship “LEVEL GRADUATE PROGRAM” is a full scholarship established by the Ministry of Education of China to support Chinese universities in recruiting outstanding international students for graduate studies in China. ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible for this scholarship, the applicant must Be a citizen of a country other than the People’s Republic of China and be mentally and physically healthy. Hold a bachelor’s degree and under the age of 35 when applying for masters program. Hold a master’s degree and be under 40 when applying for a doctoral program. I have acquired the Chinese proficiency of HSK Level 4 or 5 when applying for Chinese-taught master’s or doctoral programs. For English-taught programs: IELTS 6.0/ TOFEL 80/ Cambridge English B2 (or above) certificate dated within the last two years.

APPLICATION PROCESS

  1. Apply on the Chinese Government Scholarship website via http://www.campuschina.org and the SMU application website via https://gjy.shmtu.edu.cn/register before February 1, 2025.
  2.  Shanghai Maritime University will review all application materials and conduct interviews and scholarship evaluations before March 10, 2025. Thereafter, SMU shall confirm the list of shortlisted candidates and issue a pre-admission notice.
  3.  All shortlisted candidates MUST complete the application process by submitting their pre-admission letter via the CSC portal before March 15, 2025.
  4.  After a successful submission, China Scholarship Council (CSC) organizes designated academic units and experts to examine applicants’ eligibility and academic performance before finalizing the short-list candidates and notifying SMU on the final result. STEP 1 – Visit the “CSC Study in China” website and click “Scholarship Application for Students” at http://www.campuschina.orgRegister via [CREATE AN ACCOUNT] and log in with your details.

STEP 2- Input Personal Details: Click “Edit Personal Details” and fill in the required information. Also, ensure to verify and save the information. After completing this section, return to the previous page by clicking “Finish” and filling in your application information.

STEP 3 – Selection of “Program Category”: Kindly select Program Category “Type B”, click “New Application”, and start filling in the application information.

STEP 4- Input the correct “Agency Number: [10254].

STEP 5- Input Application Information: Next, proceed to the section of “Language Proficiency and Study Plan” and upload “Supporting Documents” as requested, then click “Submit” to complete your application. Check each part of your application carefully before submission, and make sure all the information and uploaded documents are valid and accurate. Each applicant can only submit one Type B application every academic year. Also, an applicant can only choose one university for a Type B application, even if their interested universities are more than one. The applicant will consider the submitted application the final selected university.

STEP 6- Amendments cannot be made to “Personal Details” and “Application Information” once submitted. Before the processing authorities process the application, applicants can revoke the submitted application by clicking “Withdraw” and editing the application. After revoking the application, applicants must submit it again after re-editing, or the application will not be processed. Once the application is processed, the application cannot be revoked.

STEP 7- Click “Download the Application Form” and Print.

STEP 8 -Submit the scholarship application under the requirements of the dispatching authorities (or application processing agency).Notes: Kindly use Firefox or Internet Explorer (11.0) For applicants using Internet Explorer, please close the “compatible view mode” function before editing.**Kindly fill in all application information in Chinese or English.

APPLICATION DOCUMENTS

  1. Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship (filled out in Chinese or English).
  2. Clear copy of a valid passport bio-data page.
  3. Notarized degree certificates: (If the degree is issued in other languages besides Chinese or English, it must be notarized with Chinese or English translations. Prospective graduating students must submit an official proof of student status issued by their current institution.
  4. Academic transcripts: (Doctoral candidates must provide academic transcripts for their bachelor’s and master’s degree studies, while the master’s students must provide academic transcripts for their bachelor’s degree studies).
  5. Language proficiency certificates: (Applicants for Chinese-taught programs must submit a valid HSK report corresponding to the Chinese proficiency required. Applicants for English-taught programs shall provide relevant certificates such as IELTS or TOEFL reports.
  6. Personal Study Plan written in English or Chinese language. (Doctoral candidates for Chinese-taught programs must have their study plan endorsed by a professor from SMU).
  7. A professor or associate professor issued two recommendation letters.
  8. The foreigner physical examination form was issued within the last six months.
  9. Non-criminal records have been issued within the last 6 months.
  10. Applicants under 18 must submit a legal consent letter from their parent or guardian.
  11. SMU issued a pre-admission notice after the preliminary selection.
  12. Published papers or other academic achievements (if any).

Important Note

  1. All scholarship students are managed according to the relevant regulations of SMU and CSC.
  2. Scholarship students are subjected to annual scholarship evaluations.
  3. Scholarship students shall not be authorized to change their institution, academic programs, or the duration specified on their Admission Notice. 
  4. SMU International Student Office is responsible for interpreting the scholarship application procedures.
