The Common Vein of Turkish and Chinese Poetry

Reviving a Millennia-Old Poetic Bond

Turkish and Chinese civilizations have long met not only along trade routes but also through the universal language of poetry. This deep-rooted poetic connection came alive once more at the Turkish-Chinese Poetry Gathering held in Beijing in 2025. Poets from both nations shared classical and modern works, reinforcing the common cultural ground.

Alperen Tekin, Culture and Promotion Counselor at the Turkish Embassy in Beijing, emphasized poetry as a medium that strengthens the bond between the two peoples. While Yunus Emre represents the spiritual depth of Turkish folk poetry, China is home to Tang Dynasty masters such as Li Bai and Du Fu—together forming a historical bridge of shared poetic tradition.

Chinese scholars and poets at the event noted striking parallels in themes such as nature, love, and human emotion—showcasing the emotional harmony between the two cultures.

Modern Voices with Classical Spirit

Contemporary Turkish poets like Ertuğrul Rast presented their recent works, while Chinese poets echoed the shared images in their own languages. This mutual exchange highlighted how younger generations reinterpret classical poetry in today’s context.

Such events go beyond mere cultural exchange—they play a vital role in building soft power between nations. Reviving this poetic heritage serves as a meaningful bridge toward a shared future, where mutual understanding is nurtured through art and emotion.
