On June 6, 2025, Qiu Yueqi, a PhD student from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, received the prestigious ISMRM Young Investigator Award at the annual meeting of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) held in Hawaii. Qiu was the sole global recipient of this year’s award, marking a historic achievement in China’s medical imaging technology landscape.
Founded in 1994, the ISMRM is the world’s leading academic organization in the field of magnetic resonance for medical applications.

🧠 Award-Winning Research on Low-Field MRI Technology
Qiu Yueqi is a key member of Professor Zhang Zhiyong’s research group at the School of Biomedical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The team developed a cutting-edge Spatiotemporal Encoding (SPEN) MRI technique, which significantly reduces geometric distortions compared to conventional Echo Planar Imaging (EPI).
This improvement is especially critical for the advancement of portable MRI systems, enabling clearer, more reliable diagnostic images in low-field environments, making MRI more accessible, especially in point-of-care and remote settings.
🏆 Prince-Meaney Translational Science Award
Qiu’s paper, titled “Spatiotemporal Encoding MRI in a Portable Low Field System,” earned the Prince-Meaney Translational Science Award, one of the top three honors under the ISMRM Young Investigator Awards. The award specifically recognizes research with high translational and clinical impact.
📌 Notably, this is the first time a Chinese researcher has received this prestigious award, reflecting China’s growing leadership in next-generation medical imaging systems.
💡 Beyond Academia: Innovation and Application
According to the university’s announcement, Qiu and her team have also founded a startup focused on developing patient-centered portable MRI systems. They are working to integrate SPEN technology with artificial intelligence (AI) and precision medicine, aiming to:
- Improve diagnostic accuracy
- Enable early disease detection
- Personalize treatment plans
- Enhance accessibility through affordable and mobile MRI equipment
The team is also exploring the application of their MRI innovations in pediatric brain development studies, further expanding the societal value of their research.
