Summer Graduate Research Internship at Westlake University

Westlake University’s Summer Graduate Research Internship is a four-week program open to both domestic and international students.

The program offers research internship opportunities across Westlake’s School of Science, School of Engineering, School of Life Sciences, and School of Medicine. Each summer, interns work on cutting-edge research projects, becoming part of a team of distinguished scientists. The program also includes participation in research forums, interdisciplinary round-table discussions, and cultural activities held at Westlake University or in the surrounding Hangzhou area.

The Westlake University Summer Graduate Research Internship is designed for both domestic and international students. Interns will work on research projects at the forefront of science and technology, alongside renowned faculty. The program is complemented by various activities such as research forums, interdisciplinary discussions, and cultural events.

Application Procedure

Program Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Open to both domestic and international students.
  2. Domestic Students: Applicants must be undergraduate students in their sophomore or junior year.
  3. International Students: Applicants must be current master’s students or recent graduates from a master’s program.

Application Materials:

  1. A photocopy of your I.D.
    • Domestic Students: A photocopy of your government-issued ID card.
    • International Students: A photocopy of your valid passport bio-data page.
  2. Personal Statement
    The personal statement should explain why you want to do research at Westlake, your interest in a particular Westlake faculty member, and how the internship will help you achieve your future personal, professional, or academic goals.
  3. All Transcripts
    Original or notarized copies of transcripts from any bachelor’s or master’s degree programs attended. If the transcripts are not in English or Chinese, a notarized translation in English or Chinese must be included.
  4. Evidence of English Language Proficiency
    • English is your native language.
    • A Letter of English Language Proficiency from your current undergraduate or master’s program.
    • CET-6, TOEFL, or IELTS transcripts.

Application Process:

  1. Submit Application and Materials
    Create an account on Westlake University’s doctoral application system. Carefully read the registration instructions, complete the application, and submit all materials as prompted.
  2. Wait for Admission Decision
    Applicants may be contacted for additional information. The review process generally takes about two weeks after the application deadline. (In special cases, it may take longer.) Admission results will be communicated via email.

Program Fees & Financial Assistance:

The following are the associated costs for the summer program:

  1. Application Fee
    The application fee is waived. Cost = ¥0.
  2. Internship Program Fee
    Program fees and costs are waived. Cost = ¥0.
  3. On-Campus Housing
    Housing fees are waived for interns. Cost = ¥0.
  4. Food Costs
    Research interns are responsible for their own food costs during the program. Dining options on campus, including cafeterias, food trucks, and convenience stores, cost approximately ¥500–¥1,000 RMB for the 4-week period.
  5. Visa and Health Insurance
    Research interns are responsible for covering their visa and health insurance fees.
  6. Travel Costs
    Research interns are responsible for covering their travel expenses to and from Westlake University.
