2025 Application Guide

Categories and Award Amounts

1. Guangdong Government Outstanding International Students Scholarship for Freshmen (One-time reward)
  • Doctoral students: RMB 30,000 per person
  • Master’s students: RMB 20,000 per person
  • Undergraduate students: RMB 10,000 per person
2. Southern Medical University President Scholarship for International Students
  • First Prize: Full scholarship covering tuition fees and providing a stipend
  • Second Prize: Partial scholarship with full tuition fee exemption
  • Third Prize: Partial scholarship with a 50% tuition fee exemption

Note: The duration of the SMU President Scholarship aligns with the study period stated in the admission letter and will not be extended.

3. Southern Medical University Outstanding International Students Scholarship for Freshmen (One-time reward)
  • Doctoral students: RMB 30,000 per person
  • Master’s students: RMB 20,000 per person
  • Undergraduate students: RMB 10,000 per person

Scholarship Disbursement and Payment Obligations

  • Guangdong Government & SMU Outstanding International Students Scholarship for Freshmen winners: Must pay all fees (registration, tuition, accommodation, etc.) according to the standard charges for self-funded students. The one-time scholarship amount will be transferred to the recipient’s personal bank account after registration.
  • SMU President Scholarship winners: Must pay additional fees (including the registration fee) as per the standard charges for international students. They must also undergo an annual scholarship review during their standard academic period.

Fee Structure

  • Registration Fee: RMB 800 per person (non-refundable)
  • Tuition Fees:
    • Master’s Program: Chinese Medium – RMB 38,000/year, English Medium – RMB 41,000/year
    • Doctoral Program: Chinese Medium – RMB 45,000/year, English Medium – RMB 48,000/year
  • Accommodation Fees (10-month academic year):
    • Double Room: RMB 9,000/year per person
    • Triple Room: RMB 5,000/year per person
  • Other Expenses: Textbooks, food, medical costs, utilities, drinking water, internet, medical insurance, visa extension fees, etc., are to be covered by the student.

Note: Fees are for reference only and may be subject to changes based on official pricing at the time of admission.

Application Requirements

  1. Eligibility:
    • Non-Chinese citizens with a valid foreign passport.
    • Applicants with Chinese ancestry must meet nationality requirements, including proof of foreign residency for at least two years in the last four years (by April 30, 2025).
    • Applicants who immigrated from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, or Taiwan must follow the same nationality guidelines.
  2. Health Requirements: Must meet medical standards for a Chinese study visa or residence permit.
  3. Age and Educational Background:
    • Undergraduate applicants: Under 30, with a high school diploma equivalent to China’s High School Diploma.
    • Master’s applicants: Under 35, with a Bachelor’s degree equivalent to those in Chinese universities.
    • Doctoral applicants: Under 40, with a Master’s degree equivalent to those in Chinese universities.
  4. Academic and Conduct Requirements:
    • No disciplinary violations, security infractions, or criminal record.
    • Strong academic performance:
      • Master’s & Doctoral applicants: GPA of at least 3.0, no failed or retaken courses.
      • Undergraduate applicants: Minimum score of 75 in all courses, no failed subjects.
  5. Language Proficiency:
    • Chinese Medium Programs:
      • Undergraduate: HSK 4 score ≥180 or equivalent certification.
      • Master’s & Doctoral: HSK 5 score ≥180 or equivalent certification.
    • English Medium Programs:
      • Undergraduate: IELTS ≥6.0 (minimum 5.5 in each section) or TOEFL ≥80 (minimum 15 in each section).
      • Master’s & Doctoral: IELTS ≥6.5 (minimum 6.0 in each section) or TOEFL ≥90 (minimum 20 in each section).
    • Exemptions apply to native speakers or those with previous education in the respective language.
  6. Applicants must not be recipients of the Chinese Government Scholarship.

Application Materials

For Master’s & Doctoral Programs

  • All materials required for international postgraduate applicants (see 2025 Admission Guide for International Postgraduate Students).
  • A personal statement indicating willingness to enroll as a self-funded student if the scholarship is not granted.

For Undergraduate Programs

  • All materials required for international undergraduate applicants (see 2025 Admission Guide for International Undergraduate Students).
  • Recommendation letters from a high school principal and a teacher (with signatures, contact details, and official school seal).
  • A study plan written in Chinese (for Chinese Medium programs) or English (for English Medium programs), including personal education history, undergraduate study plans, future academic aspirations, and career goals.
  • A personal statement indicating willingness to enroll as a self-funded student if the scholarship is not granted.

  • Southern Medical University President Scholarship for International Students: May 31, 2025
  • Southern Medical University Outstanding International Students Scholarship for Freshmen: June 30, 2025

Selection Process

SMU will select scholarship recipients based on interviews, entrance examinations, academic abilities, and personal development potential. The final list of Guangdong Government Outstanding International Students Scholarship winners will be submitted to the Guangdong Department of Education for approval and announcement.
