To address the increasing global demand for Chinese language educators, promote Chinese language education worldwide, and enhance the professional growth of Chinese language instructors, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) has created the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship. This initiative targets qualified Chinese language teachers outside of China.
Applications to Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) for this scholarship should adhere to the guidelines outlined below, which reference the 2024 Application Guide for the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship provided by CLEC. Recommending institutions such as Confucius Institutes, independent Confucius Classrooms, selected HSK test centers, foreign educational institutions, Chinese language teaching programs or Chinese departments in foreign universities, professional Chinese language teaching associations, and Chinese embassies and consulates abroad (hereinafter collectively referred to as “Recommending Institutions”) may nominate qualified students and active Chinese language teachers for further studies in international Chinese language education and related fields at Chinese universities (referred to as “Host Institutions”).
I. Eligibility Criteria
- Non-Chinese Citizenship: Applicants must not be Chinese citizens.
- Favorable Attitude Toward China: Applicants must have no criminal record, comply with Chinese laws and regulations, and follow the rules of the Host Institution.
- Good Health: Applicants must maintain both physical and mental health and have a strong academic and behavioral standing.
- Interest in Chinese Language Education: Applicants must be interested in pursuing Chinese language education and related careers.
- Age Limit: Applicants must be between 16 and 35 years old on September 1, 2024. The age limit for in-service Chinese language teachers may be extended to 45 years. Applicants seeking a Bachelor’s degree should generally be under 25.
II. Scholarship Categories and Requirements
A. Chinese Language Teaching Programs
- Doctoral Program in International Chinese Language Education
- Duration: Up to 4 years starting in September 2024.
- Requirements: A Master’s degree in Chinese language teaching, linguistics, international Chinese language education, or related fields. Applicants must have at least a score of 200 in HSK Level 6 and 60 in HSKK Advanced. Preference will be given to applicants who can provide a teaching contract upon completing their studies in China.
- Master’s Program in International Chinese Language Education
- Duration: Up to 2 years starting in September 2024.
- Requirements: A Bachelor’s degree and at least a score of 210 in HSK Level 5 and 60 in HSKK Intermediate. Preference will be given to applicants who can provide a teaching contract upon completing their studies in China.
- Bachelor’s Program in International Chinese Language Education
- Duration: Up to 4 years starting in September 2024.
- Requirements: A high school diploma with a minimum score of 210 in HSK Level 4 and 60 in HSKK Intermediate.
- One-Year Study Program
- Duration: 11 months starting in September 2024.
- Requirements: For International Chinese Language Education, applicants must have a score of at least 270 in HSK Level 3 and must provide an HSKK score.
- One-Semester Study Program
- Duration: 5 months, starting in either September 2024 or March 2025.
- Requirements: For International Chinese Language Education, applicants need a minimum score of 180 in HSK Level 3 and an HSKK score.
- Four-Week Study Program
- Duration: 4 weeks, either in July or December 2024.
- Requirements: Applicants must provide an HSK score. The program may be organized by recommending institutions with at least 15 participants.
B. Online Program Scholarships
- One-Year Chinese Language Study Program
- Duration: 1 year, starting in September or March.
- Requirements: Applicants need a minimum score of 180 in HSK Level 3. Priority will be given to those who provide an HSKK score.
- One-Semester Chinese Language Study Program
- Duration: 1 semester, starting in September or March.
- Requirements: An HSK score is required.
III. Scholarship Coverage
The International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship covers full tuition fees, accommodation, living allowances (for programs longer than 4 weeks), and medical insurance. Online programs only cover tuition fees.
IV. Application Procedures
Online registration starts from March 1, 2024, via the official International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website. Applicants can search for recommending and host institutions, submit materials, and track the process.
Deadlines:
- April 15, 2024 (for July start)
- May 15, 2024 (for September start)
- September 15, 2024 (for December start)
- October 31, 2024 (for March 2025 start)
The review panel will evaluate applications based on HSK and HSKK scores, geographical distribution, and other factors. Results will be published approximately three months before the program start.
V. Policies for In-Service Teachers and Chinese Bridge Winners
- In-Service Teachers: Priority may be given to active Chinese language teachers who provide employment verification and recommendations from their employers.
- Chinese Bridge Winners: Applicants who have received the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Certificate during Chinese Bridge competitions may apply directly via the website.

- Additional Requirements for Degree Program Applicants:
- Transcripts
- Reference letters from professors
- Personal statement (Doctoral: 3000 words; Master’s: study plan of 800+ words)
- Employment contract (if applicable)
- For In-Service Teachers: Employment proof and reference letter from the employer.
VII. Miscellaneous Information
- Applicants who receive a scholarship for one semester or one year within three years are not eligible for the same type of scholarship again.
- Degree students are subject to annual assessments.
- Applicants can only apply for one scholarship from the Chinese government. Multiple applications are disqualified.
