About Beijing Normal University

Beijing Normal University (BNU) is a prestigious research institution operating under the direct administration of China’s Ministry of Education. With a rich academic history and cultural heritage, BNU is recognized as a leading university in China. It is part of the country’s “Project 985” and “Project 211” initiatives, signifying its strong academic reputation. The university was included in China’s “Double First-Class” initiative in 2017 and continues to be a key participant in this project as of 2022.


I. Schools, Departments, and Programs

BNU provides various academic disciplines, offering specialized Master’s and Ph.D. programs. Detailed information about available programs can be found in the Master’s Program Catalog for International Students and the Doctoral Program Catalog for International Students.


II. Application Requirements

  1. Applicants should be in good health, demonstrate good character, respect Chinese customs, and comply with the laws and regulations of both China and the university.
  2. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens holding a valid foreign passport. Age requirements vary by program:
    • General applicants: Under 50 years old (born after August 31, 1975)
    • Chinese Government Scholarship applicants:
      • Master’s program: Under 35 years old (born after August 31, 1990)
      • Ph.D. program: Under 40 years old (born after August 31, 1985)
  3. Academic qualifications:
    • Master’s applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent.
    • Ph.D. applicants must hold a Master’s degree or its equivalent.
  4. Language proficiency requirements
    • For Chinese-taught programs:
      • Master’s programs:
        • School of International Chinese Language Education: HSK 6 (≥220) & HSKK Advanced (≥65)
        • School of Chinese Language and Literature: HSK 5 (≥210)
        • Other Schools: HSK 5 (≥195)
      • Ph.D. programs:
        • School of International Chinese Language Education: HSK 6 (≥240) & HSKK Advanced (≥65)
        • School of Chinese Language and Literature: HSK 5 (≥210)
        • Other Schools: HSK 5 (≥195)
    • For English-taught programs:
      • Applicants from non-English-speaking countries must provide proof of English proficiency as their program requires.
      • Applicants whose previous degrees were entirely taught in English are exempt from English proficiency tests but must provide relevant certification.

III. Application Timeline

  • Online Application: November 15, 2024 – March 10, 2025
  • Chinese Government Scholarship Deadline: February 28, 2025
  • Submission of Physical Documents: After passing the initial review, applicants must send hard copies by March 31, 2025. Late submissions will not be considered. International applicants should use EMS, DHL, FedEx, or UPS, while domestic applicants are advised to use EMS or SF Express.

IV. Application Process

  1. Online Submission: Register on BNU’s International Student Application System at BNU Online Application, complete the form, upload the required documents, and pay the application fee.
  2. Print Application Form: After completing the online submission, download and print the system-generated Application Form for International Students.
  3. Mail Documents: Send hard copies of required documents to the Admissions Office (International Students), Beijing Normal University

V. Required Documents

  1. Completed Application Form with a recent photograph.
  2. Notarized copy of the highest degree certificate (or proof of expected graduation for 2025 graduates).
  3. Official transcripts (notarized copies required if not in Chinese or English).
  4. Two recommendation letters from academic professionals.
  5. Language Proficiency Certificate
    • Chinese-taught programs: HSK certificate (dated no earlier than November 1, 2022).
    • English-taught programs: TOEFL, IELTS, or equivalent certification.
  6. Personal Statement Form (available for download from BNU’s online application system).
  7. Copy of passport (visa page required for applicants in China; passport must be valid beyond March 31, 2026).
  8. Non-Criminal Record Certificate (issued within the past six months).
  9. Optional: Research papers, patents, academic achievements, CV.
  10. CSC Scholarship applicants:
    • CSC Scholarship Application Form (generated from the scholarship system).
    • Foreigner Physical Examination Form (must be completed in English and include all required medical checks).

Important Notes:

  • Incomplete or unpaid applications will not be processed.
  • Additional documents may be required.
  • Application fees and submitted documents are non-refundable.
  • Applicants are responsible for ensuring the authenticity of their documents; any false information will lead to disqualification.

VI. Application Fee

  • Fee: 600 RMB (non-refundable, applies to scholarship applications as well).
  • Payment Method: Online payment only; cash is not accepted.

VII. Entrance Examinations

  • After the initial review, departments may conduct additional academic assessments and interviews as needed.
  • Admission decisions are based on these evaluations.

VIII. Admission Process

  • Admission results will be communicated via the online application system and email.
  • Phone inquiries will not be entertained.
  • Admission documents will be issued online.
  • Students must register as instructed in their admission notice. Enrollment in multiple institutions simultaneously is not permitted.

IX. Study Mode, Duration, and Tuition

  • Study Mode: Full-time only.
  • Master’s Programs:
    • Chinese-taught (Humanities & Social Sciences): 3 years
    • Chinese-taught (Science, Medicine, Engineering, Arts): 3 years
    • English-taught: 2 years
  • Ph.D. Programs:
    • All disciplines: 3 years (except Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, which is 4 years)
