Shanghai Jiaotong University – 2025 Scholarship Guidebook

Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is a world-renowned higher education institution and one of the top universities in China. It has established itself as a comprehensive, research-oriented, and internationally-focused university, currently ranked 45th worldwide (QS 2025). The university has 7 campuses and is comprised of 34 schools and departments, 13 affiliated hospitals, 13 affiliated research institutes, 23 directly affiliated units, and 5 directly affiliated enterprises, offering a wide range of degree programs.


At SJTU, we have international students from 156 different countries, with more than 4,000 currently studying on campus. The university’s 34 colleges and schools offer over 100 graduate programs taught in both English and Chinese. The typical duration for master’s programs is 2 to 3 years (full-time), while doctoral programs generally require 4 years (full-time).

ELIGIBILITY


The following are general requirements for application to SJTU International Graduate Programs.
*Eligibility:Applicants should be non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport.
*Health and Character: Applicants should be in good health and possess good character, which includes being physically and mentally healthy and meeting the medical examination requirements of both the country and the university. Applicants should also have no criminal record and maintain a friendly attitude towards China. Furthermore, applicants must be well-behaved and willing to comply with Chinese laws and regulations, as well as the rules of SJTU.


Educational Qualifications:


• For Master’s program applicants: A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent degree (or above) recognized in China is required.
• For Doctoral program applicants: A Master’s degree or an equivalent degree (or above) recognized in China is required.
Certain schools or institutions may accept Bachelor’s degree holders for direct entry into doctoral programs. For specific qualifications and requirements, please refer to the program admission information of the respective schools.

IMPORTANT DATES


October 1, 2024: Opening of 2025 applications
December 15, 2024: Deadline for 1st Round of Chinese Government Scholarship applications
February 15, 2025:Deadline for the 2nd (and final) Round of Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS) applications


Mar 31, 2025:Deadline for applications for the SGS Scholarship and SJTU Scholarship
May 31, 2025: Deadline for self-supported applications
September 2025: Enrollment

HOW TO APPLY


Step 1: Complete the Online Application
Complete and submit an online application at Study@SJTU (http://isc.sjtu.edu.cn/) before the application deadline. If you wish to apply for the scholarship at the same time, please complete the application before the scholarship deadline.


Step 2: Pay the Application Fee
The application fee is RMB 800 (approx. USD 120), non-refundable and non-transferable. Payment must be made in RMB or USD. You can choose online payment or bank transfer in the online application system.

MATERIALS TO PREPARE

  1. Degree Certificates: Please provide scanned copies of your degree certificates. Applicants who have not yet graduated at the time of application should submit an official letter from their current university indicating the expected graduation date.
  2. Transcripts: Please submit scanned copies of your transcripts. Applicants for the Master’s program are required to provide their undergraduate transcripts, while Doctoral program applicants must submit both undergraduate and graduate transcripts.
  3. Proof of Language proficiency. (Please see Language Requirement for SJTU International Graduate Programs)
  4. Scanned copy of passport (ordinary passport).
  5. Passport-size Photo.
  6. Personal Statement and Study Plan.
  7. Two Letters of Academic Recommendation: Please provide two letters of recommendation from scholars who are associate professors or higher, or from senior professionals in a related academic field. Follow the instructions on the online system for submitting recommendation letters, or upload letters that include original signatures.
  8. Supervisor Contact Requirement:If you are applying for programs of the School of Life Sciences and Biotechnology, the School of Mechanical Engineering the School of Materials Science and Engineering , or Doctoral programs of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering you are required to contact the supervisor beforehand and provide an acceptance letter by the supervisor.

Note: If your documents are not in English or Chinese, please have them translated into either English or Chinese by an authorized translation agency. Afterward, upload both the translated documents and the originals to the application system.

TUITION

Doctoral Programs: RMB 45,500 per year (approximately USD 6,600 per year).

Master’s Programs: Tuition varies by program. Please refer to the SJTU 2025 international graduate program list for details.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Incoming international graduate students have two options for scholarship applications: through Shanghai Jiao Tong University or through Chinese Embassies/Consulates in their home country. Applicants may choose only one application channel, as submitting duplicate applications through multiple channels is not permitted.

     How to Apply

            1. Apply for scholarships through SJTU

Scholarships for doctoral programs include the SJTU Fellowship, CGS/SGS Scholarship, and SJTU Scholarship.         For master’s programs, scholarships consist of the CGS/SGS Scholarship, SJTU Scholarship, Tuition Scholarships and School/College Scholarships.

Details about each scholarship can be found in the application system.

When applying at http://apply.sjtu.edu.cn/ applicants should choose “apply for scholarship through SJTU”and follow the online instructions. It is important to complete the scholarship application procedures on time, according to the university’s requirements. The agency code for SJTU is 10248. 

The sooner an applicant completes the application, the sooner he or she will receive an admission offer and scholarship, provided the university’s review results are positive. Applicants can check the scholarship result through the application system.

            2. Apply for scholarships through Chinese Embassies/Consulates in the home country

Applicants may also apply for scholarship opportunities through the Chinese Embassies or Consulates in their home countries. The application schedule varies by country (usually from November to April).

Please consult the Chinese Embassy/Consulate regarding its application schedule, eligibility, requirements, procedures, necessary documents, agency number, program categories, and other relevant information in advance.

     Important Notes:

* In general, the duration of scholarships cannot be extended.

* All scholarship recipients are required to participate in the university annual scholarship review in April and/or May, which will determine their scholarship status for the following academic year.

The distribution of the CGS scholarship may be adjusted in accordance with the policies and regulations of higher authorities.

* Annual reviews on the CGS website are strictly required for all CGS holders.

* The SJTU Scholarship, the Tuition Waiver Scholarship, as well as the School/College Scholarships, may cover either full or Partial tuition fees; please consult the school in advance.         * Regarding accommodation, SJTU does not provide free dormitories; however, the university offers an accommodation subsidy based on your scholarship coverage. Students may choose to reserve on-campus accommodation or live off-campus.
