ECNU – Shanghai Government Scholarship 2025

Scholarship Coverage

  1. Type A (Full scholarship)

Exempt from tuition fee. Provide school-arranged accommodation. Provide living allowance in China. Provide comprehensive medical care insurance for international students.

2) Type B (Partial scholarship)

Exempt from tuition fee. Provide comprehensive medical care insurance for international students.

Eligibility

1) Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens and in good health. 

2) Education background and age limit: Applicants for pre-college program must have high school diploma and be under 23 years old. Applicants for undergraduate program must have high school diploma and be under 25 years old. Applicants for the master’s program must have a bachelor’s degree and be under 35 years old. Applicants for doctoral programs must have a master’s degree and be under 40 years old. 

 3) Students who have won the Chinese Government Scholarship or any scholarship offered by other organizations are not entitled to apply for SGS.

Step 1: Apply Online

Applicants should register and apply online through http://lxsapply.ecnu.edu.cn/. Submit an online application and pay the application fee.

* Fill in and submit the Shanghai Government Scholarship Application Form. Template can be downloaded from http://lxs.ecnu.edu.cn

Step 2: Track Application Status Online

Check your email or log in to your ECNU online application account to track your application status.

* Ensure your email address is correct and check your email regularly to avoid missing IMPORTANT INFORMATION such as interview arrangements.

Step 3: Admission and University Enrollment

Admission results will be announced through the ECNU application account. Admitted students must register on time with the original graduation and degree certificates. Registration will be canceled if failure to provide the original certificate.

Undergraduate Programs

1. ECNU International Students Application Form 

Please log into the online application system at http://lxsapply.ecnu.edu.cn to fill in and pay the application fee of RMB 800 online.

2. High School Graduation Certificate

A scanned copy of the original certificate, if not in Chinese or English, a notarized and translated version in Chinese or English is required.

Graduating students should provide a certificate of impending graduation. The expected time to obtain the degree certificate should be earlier than August 31, 2025, and the graduation certificate must be submitted when registering.

3. Complete High School Transcript

A notarized and translated version in Chinese or English is required if not in Chinese or English.

4. Language Proficiency Certificate

*For Chinese-taught programs: copy of the effective (within 2 yrs) HSK certificate. Required HSK levels for each program should be referred to the program list.

*For English-taught programs: IELTS (6.0 or above), TOEFL (85 or above), and Cambridge English (B2 or above) certificates.

Exemption of English Proficiency Certificate:

(1) English is the native language or official language

(2) Other equivalent English proficiency certificates (must be reviewed and approved by ECNU)

5. Letter of self-recommendation (500-800 words)

Applicants of Chinese-taught programs should write in Chinese.

6. Photocopy of passport (including personal information page and Chinese visa pages, if any)

7. Guardian’s Letter of Guarantee is required for applicants under 18.

8. Effective (within 6 months) Health Certificate

The physical examination report must cover all items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form and provide a detailed blood test report. Incomplete forms or forms without the applicant’s photograph, a sealed photograph of the applicant, the hospital’s official stamp, or a physician’s signature are considered invalid.

9. Non-criminal Certificate (notarized photocopy in English or Chinese).

Students in the following situation should meet the conditions set by the Document No. 12 (2020) of the Ministry of Education of the PRC:

(1) Students who emigrate from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan and obtain foreign nationality;

(2) Students whose parents (either or both) hold Chinese nationality and reside abroad acquire foreign nationality at birth.

Documents required by school or institute:

Applicants of the School of Fine Art must submit the latest original artwork.

NOTE: The application documents and application fee will not be returned whether you are accepted or not.

Graduate Programs

1. ECNU International Students Application Form

Please complete the application form by logging into the online application system at http://lxsapply.ecnu.edu.cn. 

2. Graduation and Degree Certificate

Master’s degree program applicants should submit a Bachelor’s degree certificate. Doctoral degree program applicants should submit both Master’s and Bachelor’s degree certificates.

①Scanned original documents. A notarized and translated version in Chinese or English is required if documents are not in Chinese or English.

② Graduating students should provide a certificate of impending graduation; the expected time to obtain the degree certificate should be earlier than August 31, 2025. The original graduation certificate and diploma must be submitted for the registration.

3. Official Academic Transcript

Master’s degree program applicants should submit the academic transcript of undergraduate study. Doctoral degree program applicants should submit graduate and undergraduate studies academic transcripts.

① Applicants who will not graduate before the application deadline shall provide their current academic transcript. In this case, the completed academic transcript must be submitted before registration.

② Original or notarized copy documents. A notarized and translated version in Chinese or English is required if documents are not in Chinese or English.

4. Language Proficiency Certificate

① For Chinese-taught programs:

a) HSK certificate (valid within 2 years):

Liberal arts and economics majors: HSK5 (score of 210 or above) or HSK6 (score of 180 or above).

Art, physical education, and science majors (excluding economics): HSK5 (score of 180 or above).

b) Proof of Completion of a Chinese-taught Degree Program

Applicants who have completed undergraduate or master’s studies in Chinese must submit a language certificate on university letterhead issued by the university’s registrar or graduate office. Upon approval, this can replace the HSK certificate requirement.

② For English-taught programs: Native English speakers are exempted from this requirement.

a) English Proficiency Test Certificate

Applicants must submit an effective English proficiency test certificate, or other equivalent certificates reviewed and approved by ECNU. 

b) Proof of Completion of an English-taught Degree Program

Applicants who have completed undergraduate or master’s studies in English must submit a language certificate on university letterhead issued by the university’s registrar or graduate office. Upon approval, this can replace the English Proficiency Test Certificate requirement.

5. Two Recommendation Letters 

Written in Chinese or English by scholars who hold the title of associate professor or higher or senior professionals in a related academic field. The issue date of the recommendation letter should be later than September 1st, 2024. The recommendation letter MUST include the designation of the referee, place of work, contact phone number, email address, and referee’s signature. 

Please follow the instructions in the online system to submit online recommendation letters.

6. The Personal Statement

Length: Above 1000 words for master applicants and above 1500 for doctoral applicants. 

Language: Written in Chinese for Chinese-taught programs or English for English-taught programs.

Content: Include but not limited to personal study or work experience, academic research outcome, research plan, and individual goal after graduation. 

Academic and research abilities should be highlighted.

7. Photocopy of Passport (including personal information page and Chinese visa pages, if any)

8. Research Achievement

Catalog and abstract of published papers or other documents that prove academic ability (not compulsory).

Doctoral applicants should provide the abstract of the Master’s degree thesis instead of the full text.

9. Award Certificates (if applicable)

10. Research Proposal (Doctoral Program Applicants)

* Doctoral program applicants must contact the prospective academic supervisor in advance.

11. Effective (within 6 months) Health Certificate

The physical examination report must cover all items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form and provide a detailed blood test report. Incomplete forms or forms without a sealed photograph of the applicant, the hospital’s official stamp, or a physician’s signature are considered invalid. 

12. Non-Criminal Certificate (notarized photocopy in English or Chinese).

Applicants shall submit a valid Certificate of Non-Criminal Record (or Police Clearance Certificate) issued by the local public security (such as the police station), usually issued within six months before the submission date of the application.

Supplemental Documents required by school or institute: 

Applicants for art-related majors should submit a portfolio.
