Application Guidelines for the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship 2025
To address the increasing global demand for Chinese language educators and enhance Chinese language learning worldwide, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) has established the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship (hereinafter referred to as “the Scholarship”). This initiative supports eligible Chinese language instructors outside China in their academic and professional development.
Confucius Institutes, independent Confucius Classrooms, designated HSK test centers, foreign educational institutions, Chinese language teacher training programs, Chinese departments at international universities, professional organizations for Chinese language instruction, and Chinese embassies or consulates abroad may nominate outstanding students and in-service Chinese language teachers for advanced studies in international Chinese language education at Chinese universities.
Below are the details of the 2025 International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship at Zhejiang University:
I. Eligibility Requirements
- Must be a non-Chinese citizen.
- Should demonstrate a friendly attitude towards China, possess no criminal record, and comply with Chinese laws and Zhejiang University’s regulations.
- Must be in good physical and mental health, with a strong academic background and good behavioral conduct.
- Should have a keen interest in Chinese language education and related fields.
- Age should be between 18 and 35 (as of September 1, 2025). In-service Chinese language teachers may apply until the age of 45.
II. Scholarship Categories and Qualifications
1. Master’s Degree in International Chinese Language Education
- Program starts in September 2025 and lasts for up to two academic years.
- Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree.
- Required minimum scores: 210 on HSK Level 5 and 60 on the HSKK (Intermediate Level) test.
- Preference will be given to applicants with a job offer from a teaching institution or proof of potential employment post-graduation.
2. One-Year Study Program (Chinese Language and Literature)
- Begins in September 2025, with a duration of up to eleven months.
- Applicants who have previously received a similar scholarship in the past three years are ineligible.
- Required minimum scores: 180 on HSK Level 4 and 60 on HSKK (Intermediate Level).
3. One-Semester Study Program (Chinese Language and Literature)
- Available in September 2025 or March 2026, lasting up to five months.
- Applicants who have received a similar scholarship within the past three years are ineligible.
- Required minimum scores: 180 on HSK Level 3. HSKK test results are also required.
III. Scholarship Benefits
The scholarship covers:
- Tuition fees
- Accommodation costs
- Monthly living allowance
- Comprehensive medical insurance

IV. Application Deadlines (Beijing Time)
- May 15, 2025: For programs starting in September 2025.
- October 31, 2025: For the One-Semester Study Program beginning in March 2026.
V. Application Process
- Register online at the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website (http://cis.chinese.cn/account/login) and Zhejiang University’s online application system (http://isinfosys.zju.edu.cn/recruit/login.shtml).
- Complete the application form and upload the required documents before the deadlines.
- Monitor the application status online.
- Admitted applicants must confirm with Zhejiang University and complete the necessary procedures for studying in China.
VI. Required Documents
For All Applicants:
- Scanned copy of the passport (valid until at least March 1, 2026).
- HSK and HSKK test score reports (valid within the past two years).
- A recommendation letter from the head of the nominating institution.
Additional Documents for Master’s Degree Applicants:
- Bachelor’s degree certificate or pre-graduation certificate (final diploma required upon registration).
- Academic transcripts from undergraduate studies.
- A personal statement (at least 1500 words) in Chinese, detailing academic background, work experience, motivations, and study plans.
- Two recommendation letters from full or associate professors (in Chinese or English, including signatures and contact details).
- Published academic papers or other academic achievements (if available).
- “Form for Provisional Acceptance of International Student by ZJU Supervisor” (if available).
- Notarized employment agreement with a teaching institution (if available).
- A “Foreigner Physical Examination Form” completed in English, stamped by a recognized hospital. Medical exams should be recent (valid for six months).
- Non-Criminal Record Certificate (valid for six months).
For Applicants with Changed Citizenship:
- Proof of renouncing Chinese citizenship.
- Proof of cancellation of Chinese household registration.
- Documentation confirming acquisition of foreign citizenship.
- Self-Statement Form of Nationality Status and Nationality Confirmation and Guarantee Letter.
For Those Born Abroad to Chinese Parents:
- Documentation proving foreign citizenship at birth.
- Proof of the Chinese parent’s permanent residence in a foreign country before the applicant’s birth.
- Self-Statement Form of Nationality Status and Nationality Confirmation and Guarantee Letter.
Additional Requirement for Master’s Program Applicants:
- Signed “Commitments for Zhejiang University Master Application” (PDF format, complete and hand-signed). Incomplete submissions will not be processed.
Important Notes
- No hard copies of application materials should be sent by post or email. Paper applications and email submissions will not be processed.
- Documents must be in Chinese or English. If in other languages, notarized translations must be provided.
