On April 26, 2025, our online event titled “Exploring China: Observations and Proverbs” was successfully held, attracting a wide audience from both Türkiye and China. The event provided a valuable platform for sharing knowledge in the fields of Sinology and cross-cultural communication.
The session was moderated by Utku Güngör, who currently resides in Beijing and is pursuing his doctoral studies there. In his opening remarks, he shared his personal experiences of learning Chinese, reflecting on both the challenges and the joys of the journey.
Our first speaker, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fatma Ecem Ceylan from Nevşehir Hacı Bektaş Veli University, gave a presentation titled “China in Turkish Travelogues.” She discussed Turkish travelers’ observations of China, highlighting important historical works such as Gıyaseddin Nakkaş’s Hıtay Sefaretnamesi, Ali Ekber Hıtâî’s Hıtâynâme, and the writings of Defterdar Seyfi Çelebi. Dr. Ceylan emphasized how these travelogues offer valuable insights into the Ming and Qing dynasties.
Following this, Mingyan Zhao, founder of Unifons Chinese, delivered a talk on the historical roots and cultural meanings of Chinese proverbs. She highlighted how proverbs serve not only as a tool for language learning but also as a key to understanding Chinese culture and philosophy.
With simultaneous Turkish–Chinese interpretation, the event allowed for active engagement from participants across Türkiye. The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, where attendees had the opportunity to ask questions and exchange ideas.
